Heighington Christmas market was started many years ago. After running as a small market to raise money for charity (and then taking a few years break), the Christmas market was resurrected in December 2005.
Taking place on the first Sunday in December, our traditional street market is run by a small committee of volunteers, ably assisted by 'friends' – people who give their time to help on the day. These include stall erectors, traffic assistants and parkingattendants (usually our wonderful local Scout group). The market could not run without the backing of the local community, who are not only patient and accommodating with the hustle and bustle on the day, (and also help with donating our electricity for the stalls in some cases!) but also provide a lovely, welcoming community feel to the occasion.
The market has grown over the years and now boasts a good reputation and some 100 stalls offering food, gifts and other crafts for Christmas. In 2018 the market changed hands – with a new committee at the helm there will be more entertainment and catering facilities to go alongside the wonderful amount of stalls that the previous committee created.
Planning starts in January and continues right up to the day – it's always strange talking about Christmas when people are planning summer holidays! However, while the committee might be focused on festivities many months in advance, we are always looking for more 'friends' to assist on the date itself, and would love to hear from you if you are interested.
The market is not for profit, and fully self financing. It is our aim to benefit the local community as much as possible; from having a small number of local charity stalls (and donating to charities where possible – in the past these have included "Listening Ears," "Wish Upon A star", the local Hospitals Midwifery appeal, LIVES and Help for Heroes) to trying to involve local groups and our wonderful primary school; our local businesses also benefit from the market, and we try to offer the community children some activities in the summer holidays with any remaining funds.
